The Women of Heroes

Although the popular show “Heroes” seems to focus on primarily male characters, there are a number of female characters on the show that are just as interesting as the men.

First, there's Claire. As the lead female character of the show, it would be plain wrong for me to leave her out. As the cheerleader of the whole “Save the cheerleader, save the world” story arc, Claire has definitely grown beyond the whole cheerleader identity. I'm glad. I wanted to see her go beyond the daddy's girl image. The idea of her being evil in the future was exciting, but what pleased me the most was the fact that she was thinking for herself, even if that meant disobeying and going against daddy.

What is there to say about the complex Niki/Jessica/Traci thing? The characters themselves aren't complex–more like compound–but the fact that the writers keep having Ali Larter play someone else is just confusing. What I want is a clear explanation–not just five minutes of a scene dedicated to an attempt of an explanation–so they can properly explain how these three characters are related. The writers shouldn't be allowed to just kill off a character, get the same actress playing the previous character, and call that person a new character. I want answers! I liked Niki better, but the writers really dropped the ball when it came time to explain what happened to her after she went into that burning building.

There are a few characters I'm not sure what happened to. Remember Monica? She was related to Micah, a cousin, I think. I found her powers to be one of the most attention-grabbing and original out of all the “Heroes” cast. I don't think she was very popular with the audience because she didn't reappear in any episodes after Niki went into the burning building.

How about Maya, the young woman who came to America from Venezuela with her brother Alejandro? I found her destructive powers quite remarkable, and I was really disappointed when she had those powers removed. Powerless, she seemed to simply disappear from the show even though she occasionally re-appeared as Mohinder's love interest.

There are two characters I thought were especially appealing. Angela Petrelli, the mother of both Peter and Nathan, has shown herself to be a multidimensional character and really well-developed. On the surface, she's a cold and calculating woman who has others do her dirty work. While she has proven herself to be manipulative, most of her motivations stem from protecting her children. The other is Claire's mom. I didn't like her at first because she seemed like the typical naive housewife, but she surprised me and proved to be a resourceful character when it came to evading authorities to help people who had powers.

Having two female characters die–Elle, and most recently, Daphne–seemed like a disappointing move on the writers' part. I thought that Elle and Daphne were fascinating characters with great potential towards advancing the story. They way that Elle died–killed by Sylar–was reasonable enough, but Daphne, the fastest woman in the “Heroes” universe, couldn't even dodge a bullet. I didn't want to see her slowed down by a coma let alone death.

“Heroes” has a lot of good things going for it, one of which includes appealing characters. The downside to this is that many of the lead characters tend to be male. I wonder how much the show would improve if there were more female lead characters?
