The Abilities of Heroes

The whole idea about Heroes is that perfectly normal people are suddenly and without explanation developing random powers, granted to them as a part of the evolutionary process. Now, I find it hard to believe that some of the powers in Heroes, like, say, Ted Sprague's radiation, would be very useful evolutionarily. But, it is not my place to question evolution. So let us take a look at some of the powers exhibited in Heroes.

Having read comics for most of my life, I know that certain superpowers are far more common than others. The common ones exhibited in Heroes include Niki Sanders. super strength, Nathan Petrelli's flight, Meredith Gordon's pyrokinetics, and Matt Parkman's telepathy. These kinds of things exist in more than triplicate in both DC and Marvel Comics. In fact, super strength is the most common superpower of all, since basically most superheroes and supervillains with any sort of powers possess a certain degree of enhanced strength.

Then, we have some of the weirder ones. First, as I mentioned, is Ted Sprague's radiation emission. There are a few characters who can manipulate radiation, most notably Radiation Man from Marvel and Captain Atom from DC. Most of them are very dangerous to be around. Radiation Man, during his tenure in the Thunderbolts, had to wear a radiation suit so he would not hurt those around him. Ted Sprague is much like that, as evidenced by his wife's cancer and eventual death.

Next, there is Micah Sanders. technopathy, the ability to psychically communicate with and manipulate technology. The most obvious character with that power is the famous Cable from the X-Franchise, who gained his powers from the techno-organic virus running through his body. Micah, unfortunately, is just a child, so he does not yet know right or wrong very well. As such, he stole money from an ATM using his powers to help his family. Definitely going to be a problem in the future.

Then, we have Claire Bennet. Now, a healing factor, the ability to heal quickly over a short period of time, is not that weird. Wolverine has such a factor himself. But she can regenerate basically everything almost instantly, short of her head if it were cut off. That is pretty spectacular. It even protects her from diseases and radiation. It must be nearly impossible to kill that girl.

The most interesting and different power in the series belongs to Sylar, which is described by wikipedia.com as "intuitive aptitude." Underlying all the powers he has acquired is the ability to understand how anything works, to understand inherently complex patterns and systems. With this power, Sylar has made himself the most powerful superhuman in the world of Heroes, since he can take anyone's power, aside from, perhaps, Claire's. No character in comics or anything else has such a power, so Sylar is more special than he could have ever imagined.
