Linderman

Of all the characters of Heroes, perhaps none are more mysterious than Mr. Linderman, the powerful mob boss who has his nose in everyone's business. He is also a part of the equally enigmatic Corporation, which is partially responsible for the entire superhuman issue. He has had a great effect on the lives of the Petrellis and the Hawkins/Sanders, and he has been mentioned at least once by almost every other character in the show. He is a very busy man. Plus, he manages to find time to collect fine art and cook. That scene with the chicken pot pie made me hungry.

Anyway, first, we have the Petrellis. Mr. Petrelli, Nathan and Peter's father, was Mr. Linderman's lawyer for many years. After his supposed death, Nathan was approached by the district attorney, who wanted him to prosecute Linderman. He initially agreed but ultimately refused after the accident that left his wife paralyzed and him without any serious injuries, due to the sudden manifestation of his powers. Months later, at the start of the show, Nathan heads to Las Vegas to meet with Linderman to try and get assistance from Linderman in his race for the House of Representatives. Here, Linderman's two main interferences cross. He has Niki sleep with Nathan to pay off her debt, then tapes them together as blackmail. Once Nathan discovers this, after escaping from the Company, he asks for extra money, as he realizes how important Linderman considers his victory to be. Linderman later reveals that he wants to get Nathan into Congress to eventually get him close to the presidency, for reasons that are not yet certain.

As for Niki, Linderman is less actively interested in her and her family. She borrowed money from him in an attempt to pay off debts. When she did not pay, Linderman sent some of his men after her. It is then that Jessica manifests for the first time in the show, killing Linderman's men and saving her life. Eventually, Linderman agrees to waive her debt if she sleeps with Nathan Petrelli. She refuses, but Jessica ignores her and completes the contract herself. In addition, the $2 million that D. L.'s former gang stole belonged to Linderman. While Niki is in jail, D. L. returns the money to one of Linderman's lawyers, who chooses to take it for himself. Linderman then arranges for Niki's release, and Jessica takes control, becoming Linderman's hit man. She murders the lawyer who stole Linderman's money and two FBI officers, but Niki takes control again when she is ordered to kill Nathan, for reasons that are also not certain. Linderman then later takes Micah in order to use his powers to ensure Nathan's victory in the Congressional race.

Linderman was one of the founding members of the Company, and all his actions are designed to try and increase the power of the Company across the world. But what exactly does the Company want? Total control over the world and all powered persons? Or something even worse? Either way, Linderman's death puts an end to his constant scheming and manipulation. He seemed to be doing things because he truly believed that his actions would improve the world, as based on his dialogue with Nathan. However, he wanted to allow Peter to blow up New York, which would have sacrificed millions of people just to give Nathan the presidency. Such methods are extremely dangerous, and it can be argued that well-meaning methods that willingly sacrifice lives are not worth the cost. At any rate, Linderman is a member of the ranks of dead founding Company members who we can now only see in flashbacks. Too bad. I liked Malcolm McDowell's acting a lot.
