Fathers and Sons

One of the recurring topics of Heroes is the relationships fathers have with their sons. Micah and D. L., Mohinder and Chandra, Hiro and Kaito, and the Petrelli brothers and their father have all seen screen time explaining their relationships. In particular, Mohinder and Chandra's relationship has been examined extensively, largely because Chandra was the one who discovered the formula to finding the people with powers. But let us take a look at all these father and son pairs and see what we find.

The first is Micah Sanders and D. L. Hawkins. D. L. led a group of criminals before the events of the series to try and get his family out of its economic woes. He ended up leaving the group, but shortly later, they stole $2 million from the enigmatic Mr. Linderman, and he was arrested for their crime. Then, up until the events of the show, Niki raised Micah by herself. The two must have had a good relationship before, since Micah constantly asked his mom when D. L. was coming back. They were also very happy to see each other after his return. So, despite their separation, Micah and D. L. had a rather positive relationship, though neither D. L. nor Niki had a chance to explain the consequence of stealing money from an ATM yet.

On the other hand, there was Mohinder and Chandra. Chandra loved his daughter very much, and her death was a harsh blow to him. As such, he was not particularly kind to his son. He considered his son fragile, and he wanted to keep him safe, even if it meant distancing himself from him. No action of Chandra's was more obvious in that respect than his decision to move to the United States to look for the people with superpowers. Mohinder thought that Chandra was abandoning his family and his life, which Chandra was indeed doing. But Chandra did not want Mohinder to come with him because he wanted him to live his own life and to be happy, even if it meant that the two of them would not speak again. Mohinder does take up Chandra's research after his death, however, and it seems that Mohinder is a fundamentally good person following in his father's footsteps, though that was not his first choice in life.

Next are Hiro and Kaito. We know much less about them than the previous two pairs, but we can tell from their interactions that Kaito was a very stereotypical Japanese father: strict, dutiful, yet caring in his own way. He wanted Hiro to take over his position in the company eventually, as is often customary in Japanese businesses. Children often succeed their fathers as both heads of the family and heads of their companies. However, Hiro seems to have developed largely as a reaction against Kaito's strict parenting methods, so their relationship is clearly not very positive. Rather, Kaito seems to have had better luck with raising Kimiko than Hiro.

Lastly, we have Peter, Nathan, and their father. Their father is dead, or so we think, but based on Angela's dialogue, he preferred Nathan over Peter. As such, Nathan is ruthless and cunning, much as his father likely was, whereas Peter, as a reaction against his father, is kind and empathic. Like Hiro, he became what his father did not want him to be. Excepting Nathan, who is more than a little selfish, all of the sons seem to be good people, though Micah is young and immature. Yet they have all had rocky relationships with their fathers, due to parenting methods and circumstances beyond their control.
