Stage Fright: The Unorthodox Mission Solution
Imagine a company that could imprint someone with the personality, skills, and desires to your exacting specifications. This is the premise of the new Joss Whedon show Doll House, which follows the adventures of Echo, an agent played by Eliza Dushku. In the most recent episode, “Stage Fright”, Echo is imprinted with the personality of Jordan, a back up singer, with a strong desire to protect the life of Rayna, a pop star with a crazy homicidal fan.
Jordan and Rayna become fast friends, and Jordan's latent knowledge is used to be able to limit security risks. She soon discovers, however, that Rayna wants to die because she is tired of being what she considers a non person, and living the role others want her to play in life. This is highly ironic because neither of them realize that Jordan is doing just that to save her life.
Some people at the Doll House felt that Jordan went off mission when she knocked out Rayna and used her as bait to confront the crazed fan, who had kidnapped Audra, who is another active, like Echo. Jordan threatens Rayna's life in an effort to knock the stalker off balance, and rescue Audra, but her real goal was to make Rayna realize that she truly wants to live. By threatening her life, Jordan is actually working within the mission parameters, because the one who truly wanted Rayna dead, was Rayna herself. While it was very unorthodox, it was the only real long term solution to the problem.
