The Intel Atom N270 Processor is Insufficient for Video Streams
Our family has gravitated around the FIFA World Cup play-offs. And it's really wonderful that ESPN3 provides video streams to the full games so that we can watch it on our Panasonic Viera TC-P50C1 big screen TV with our media center computer.
Just last week, I purchased the Asus EB1006-B-111-5002 EEE Box Nettop to use as our media center computer. This small computer is small and fits in our entertainment center wonderfully. It's Intel Atom N270 is the same processor that are used in many netbooks today. I've tested my other netbook, using the same processor, with my video collection and they all played back fine. So I figured that its ATI Radeon HD 4530-DX9 series with 256MB DDRII video card will be able to handle any video streams that comes its way. I was wrong.
While streaming the ESPN3 World Cup games to the big screen, my wife commented that she's got a head-ache watching the games. She said she didn't have this problem with her dual-core notebook computer.
I compared the two and, sure enough, ESPN3 video stream was running at 1-star video quality with the nettop computer. On the other hand, it ran at 4-star video quality on my wife notebook computer. In hind sight, today's Intel Atom N270 processor is under-powered for today's video streaming technologies. We'll need another low-price option for our media center computer.
